Apple To Buy Car Company? What That Means For Your Business

It is reported today in the San Francisco Chronicle, and widely elsewhere, of a link between electric car manufacturer Tesla and electronics retailer Apple – Apple to buy car company?

We look at the impact or opportunity this could mean to your business.

Apple To Buy Car Company? Really?

The report states that the CEO of the car manufacturer, Elon Musk, has met on more that one occasion, with Apple’s ‘Head of Mergers’ Adrian Perica.

It is also reported that Mr Musk has met with Apple boss Tim Cook at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, creating speculation that from such high-level discussions a  buy out of Tesla is probable.

Although, on the other hand, a note of caution is sensible as this is not the first time that such discussions have taken place between the two companies. The report online at ‘SF Gate’ also noted that a spokeswoman for Tesla declined to comment. Apple did not respond to a request for comment either.

Apple To Buy Car Company? Why Would They?

In the past Apple has interest in the car market and announced deals with BMW, Daimler, Mercedes and Honda to produce smart dashboards featuring iOS, the same operating system used by iPads and iPhones.

It has also collaborated with Tesla in the past by supplying its map technology, alongside Audi and Toyota.

Purchasing a car manufacturer, especially one with environmentally and forward looking products, would be a logical step as Apple attempts to diversify in to other business sectors.

Also, cars are for most people the largest gadget they own. Apple’s products, such as the iPhone and iPad are full of tech that could be adapted for your car – telephony, music, navigation and integrated ‘social media’ for the driver – video, apps, games and many more features for the passengers.

Integrating Tom Tom data and Apple’s mapping  could be a laser guided navigation system, put a camera on the car and integrate with ‘street view’ could provide a ‘live view’ of the route, labeling points of interest and local businesses along the journey.
