How do I know if customers are finding me through AI search?
Three places tell you: Google Analytics, where AI tools show up as referral traffic; Google Search Console, where AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted inside your overall Web search figures; and your own enquiry records, where customers increasingly say “ChatGPT recommended you”. Check all three monthly and you will know more than most of your competitors.
This is the question of 2026 for small business owners. You keep hearing that people ask AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity instead of Googling, and you want to know whether any of that is sending business your way. It is measurable, mostly with tools you already have. Here is exactly where to look.
Check Google Analytics for AI referral traffic
When someone clicks a link inside one of the big AI platforms – ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Gemini – the visit lands in Google Analytics 4 as referral traffic from that tool’s domain. In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and switch the dimension to Session source. Look for entries like chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
Two honest caveats. First, this only counts the people who clicked a link. Plenty of people read an AI answer, then search your business name or type your address directly, and that visit shows as brand search or direct traffic instead. Second, some AI visits arrive with no referrer at all. So GA4 gives you the floor, not the ceiling. If AI referrals are rising month on month, the real figure is rising faster.
A tip that makes this useful: watch which pages those AI visitors land on. They are usually your plain question-and-answer content, which tells you what the AI tools find worth quoting, and that is your content strategy for AI: write more of what already gets quoted. Across our own clients we now see roughly a third of new leads mentioning an AI tool somewhere in how they found us. That was close to zero two years ago.
Check Search Console for the overall picture
Google Search Console includes impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in its standard Performance report, within the “Web” search type – Google does not break them out separately, so there is no AI-only figure to filter to. What it still tells you is your overall Google search performance: impressions, clicks and the queries you appear for.
If you have never opened Search Console, it is free, it is Google’s own data, and setting it up takes one verification step on your website. Every business owner should have it, AI or no AI.
Ask every new enquiry how they found you
The oldest method is still the one that catches what the tools miss. When someone rings or fills in your form, ask how they found you, and write it down. “I asked ChatGPT who does this near me” is now a normal answer, and no analytics package will ever attribute that visit correctly, because the customer often searched your name afterwards.
Give your phone answering one extra question and a simple tally sheet, and within a month you will have the truest picture available to any small business. We do this ourselves and with clients, and it regularly surfaces AI mentions that no report showed.
What the numbers will and will not tell you
| Question | Best place to look | What it honestly tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Are AI tools sending me clicks? | GA4 traffic acquisition by session source | Clicks from chatgpt.com, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini – a floor, not the full picture |
| How is my Google search traffic performing overall? | Search Console Performance report | Impressions, clicks and queries – AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Web figures, not itemised |
| Are customers really finding me this way? | Your own “how did you find us?” tally | The full story, including people analytics cannot see |
| Which content earns AI mentions? | GA4 landing pages for AI referrals | Which answers get quoted, so you can write more of them |
If the numbers are flat or zero
Do not panic, and do not pay anyone who panics you. AI referral traffic is still small for most local businesses, and zero this month does not mean zero forever. The work that earns AI search visibility is the same work that earns Google rankings: clear pages that answer real customer questions in plain language, basic structured data (schema markup) so machines can read your details, a complete Google Business Profile, and steady reputation management through genuine, recent reviews. AI answers lean on your brand’s presence across the whole web, not just your own site, and AI models learn from their training data and from live web retrieval, so fresh, clear content keeps getting new chances to be quoted. If you are doing those, you are already in the game. Our guide to getting your business recommended by AI tools covers the groundwork, and the honest version is that there are no shortcuts, whatever the sales emails say.
What Bamsh can do
We check these three sources for clients every month and report them in plain English: AI referrals, AI impressions, and what customers actually said. Simple free brand monitoring helps between reports – a Google Alert on your business name sometimes catches the mentions AI answers pick up. It all sits inside our normal SEO and AI Search Optimization work, not as an extra bolt-on, and our prices are on the site, plus VAT. If you want to know where you stand, book a call and we will look at your real numbers together, not a generic audit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see exactly what people asked ChatGPT about my business?
No. The AI platforms do not share the questions, only the clicks that result, and not always those. What you can see is which of your pages AI visitors land on, which tells you the topics being quoted. Combine that with asking customers directly and you get most of the picture.
How much traffic should I expect from AI search?
For most small local businesses today, AI referrals are a small slice of total traffic, but growing quickly. Across our own client base roughly a third of new leads now mention an AI tool at some point. Two years ago that was almost nothing, which is why we check monthly rather than guessing.
Does Google Analytics count AI Overviews traffic?
Not separately. Visits from Google’s own AI Overviews show as ordinary Google organic traffic. Search Console likewise folds AI Overviews and AI Mode into its overall Web search figures – Google does not break them out in either tool. Third-party AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity do show in GA4, as referral traffic from their domains.
Do I need to pay for special AI tracking software?
Not to start. GA4, Search Console and a notebook by the phone cover the three sources in this guide, and all are free. Paid AI search visibility tools exist and some are useful for larger sites, but they add nothing for a small business until the free basics are in place and being read.
My competitor keeps appearing in AI answers. Why them and not me?
Usually because their content answers the question more plainly, their business information is consistent everywhere, their reviews are stronger and more recent, or they are cited in the press coverage and directories the AI trusts. AI models quote clear, specific, trustworthy sources. Look at the page being quoted and ask honestly whether yours answers the same question better. That is the whole game.
